Read the decision letter first. It should tell you the appeal route and mediation information. In most cases you must consider mediation before an appeal; a Section I-only appeal is treated differently. Always check the current Tribunal guidance and form for the deadline that applies to your decision.

Three small, informed moves

Identify the decision and scope

Write down what the local authority decided, the date of the decision and the exact sections or issues you disagree with. Keep the issue list short and evidence-led.

Check the live process

Use GOV.UK to check mediation requirements, the online or paper form, supporting documents and the applicable deadline. Do not rely on a pre-written calendar, as case directions and requirements vary.

Build an evidence map

For each issue, link the evidence to the amendment or outcome you are seeking. A clear working document is usually more useful than a long narrative of every difficult event.
