NHS choice is not a provider list. At the point of a suitable referral in England, there may be a legal right to choose a provider or clinical team, subject to the current Choice Framework and exceptions. Your GP and the provider should confirm clinical suitability, the referral route and current contract status.

A practical path

Three small, informed moves

01

Prepare a short GP discussion note

Describe the concerns, duration, impact and existing support. Ask whether a referral is clinically appropriate and what choices are available at the point of referral.

02

Check current information

Use the NHS Choice Framework and the chosen provider’s current referral materials. Do not rely on old social-media lists or assume a provider accepts every age group or pathway.

03

Submit independent evidence transparently

When an EHC needs assessment is underway, identify the report, its author, date and relevance. Ask the local authority to include and consider it alongside the wider evidence.

Editable request: submit independent evidence for consideration

Adapt the wording to your family’s facts. Attach only information you are comfortable sharing, and keep a copy of what you send.
