A shared regulation plan for home and school
The Green–Amber–Red–Blue plan helps parents and school turn observations into a practical, time-limited regulation-support trial. It is not a behaviour chart. It is a way to agree early signs, safe responses, a named contact and a review date.
Green — settled enough to build capacity
Record what helps this child feel safe and connected, including preferred communication, sensory support, food, movement, rest and relationships. The best plan starts with what already works.
Amber — early signs that pressure is growing
Describe the individual signs: pacing, getting louder or quieter, repetitive questions, refusing, leaving the room, tears, becoming still or appearing silly. Agree which demands, language and sensory input should reduce early.
Red — immediate safety and lowered demand
Write the least intrusive safe steps: create distance, protect siblings, remove hazards, use few words and do not expect a reasoned conversation in the peak of distress. Include when urgent outside support is needed.
Blue — recovery, repair and review
Agree a low-pressure recovery route, how adults reconnect afterwards and what needs to be logged factually. Set a named home–school contact and review the trial after three weeks.
How to use the plan without turning it into blame
- Fill in the first version at home, using what you have already noticed.
- Take it to a short meeting with the SENCO or named member of staff.
- Choose a small number of adjustments to try consistently for three weeks.
- Meet again to decide what to keep, change or escalate.
